World Economic Forum white paper: Better mental health through ethical adoption of technology

What we’re reading: Among its many initiatives, the World Economic Forum (WEF) is committed to shaping the future of health and health care. Explore this WEF white paper published in July 2019 — Empowering 8 Billion Minds: Enabling Better Mental Health for All via the Ethical Adoption of Technologies. Amid the growing worldwide need to improve diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and self-care of mental health conditions, how can technology potentially support individuals across the mental health care continuum?

A Kaiser Permanente case study is featured on page 16. When online tools were embedded into an overall system of care supporting the patient’s wellness and recovery, the patient engagement rate soared to an average of 30% across all online tools — 2 to 3 times higher than the industry average. Kaiser Permanente will continue to examine the “digital formulary” and narrow it to the most effective tools before spreading them widely throughout the organization.
