Prior to developing Kaiser Permanente HealthConnect®, Kaiser Permanente used multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems. With each of the 8 regions functioning independently, Kaiser Permanente’s disparate information technology (IT) systems shared limited data elements and required customization and costly maintenance. What was the business case that prompted leadership’s decision to develop an in-house solution? How did leaders at various levels collaborate to make KP HealthConnect a reality? What lessons were learned along the way?
